Job description – Early Years Practitioner

Hemblington Pre-School 

Job purpose:

1. To manage and sustain a high standard of care and education for all children placed at the setting

2. To work with all staff, students and volunteers in ensuring all children receive the highest quality care and education

3. To implement the daily care and routines at the setting

Context:

  • Working with children

  • Working with other Early Years Healthcare Professionals such as Speech and Language Therapists

Hours of work: 

 

TUESDAY SESSION: 8.30 - 1 P.M., STAFF MEETING: 1 - 3 P.M.

WEDNESDAY SESSION: 8.30 A.M. - 4 P.M.

THURSDAY SESSION: 8.30 A.M. - 4 P.M.

HOURS INCLUDES SUPERVISING LUNCH AND SETTING UP/ TIDYING EQUIPMENT AWAY BEFORE/AFTER SESSION PER WEEK, TO THE SUCCESSFUL COMPLETION OF YOUR DUTIES.

HOLIDAY PAY: Holiday entitlement is the statutory entitlement per year and will be calculated using the statutory holiday multiplier of 12.07%. For every hour worked the employee earns 0.1207 hours holiday 

 

PENSION SCHEME: WE OFFER AN AUTO ENROLMENT WORKPLACE PENSION SCHEME.

 

Probationary period: 6 months

 

Key responsibilities:

Health and safety

Safeguarding – understand and adhere to the setting’s safeguarding policies and follow procedures to keep children safe and secure and ensure that others at the setting are adhering to the policy.

  • Adhering to policies and procedures prioritising health and safety legislation and requirements

  • Sharing responsibility for ensuring the health, cleanliness and safety of the children and their environment at all times

  • Be fully aware of all emergency and security procedures e.g. registering children, collection policy, and fire safety procedures

  • Ensuring the highest of hygiene and cleanliness standards during care routines e.g. nappy changing and food preparation

  • Adhere to the setting’s code of conduct

  • Report safeguarding concerns about any adult working in the setting to the manager following the setting’s procedure regarding whistle-blowing

Childcare and education

  • Support the emotional, physical, social, spiritual and intellectual needs of all children attending the setting

  • Observe, extend and support children’s learning.  Complete Learning  Journeys  using on-line Tapestry

  • Respect the confidentiality of children and their families

  • Plan, prepare and deliver activities and experiences which promote children’s learning and development using the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

  • Respect the confidentiality of children and their families

  • Maintain accurate and effective children’s records

  • Work in partnership with the setting Special educational needs coordinator(SENCO) and other agencies and professionals as appropriate e.g. Speech and language therapist (SALT), Ofsted, Social Worker etc.

  • Demonstrate good practice in supporting children with additional needs and inclusion

  • Carry out and meet the requirements of the Key Person role to a high standard

  • Initially shadowed in the Key Person role, create positive working relationships and partnerships with parents and to promote parental involvement

  • Learn about developments in early years childcare and education

Operational

  • Ensure policies and procedures for the day-to-day running of the setting are adhered to, including all record keeping

  • Work with other colleagues as a team to ensure the highest standards of care and education are provided for all the children attending the setting

  • Demonstrate a flexible approach to day-to-day duties to ensure smooth running and operation of the setting

  • Work with the manager during inspections and to assist in implementing any recommendations given by any regulatory body

Learning and development

  • Support student practitioners with day to day questions where applicable

  • Attend staff meetings and engage in self-development appraisals and supervisions

  • Demonstrate a willingness to attend training and to take opportunities for continuous professional development

PERSON SPECIFICATION

EARLY YEARS PRACTITIONER

Essential Attainments and work experience

  • Previous work /voluntary experience with under 5’s.

  • Minimum NVQ Level 2 Childcare and Development

  • Good level of Literacy and Numeracy, ideally GCSE grade C or above.

  • First Aid training.

  • Safeguarding training.

  • Other relevant skills, e.g. food hygiene.

  • NVQ Level 3 Childcare and Development

  • Speech and Language experience.

  • SEND experience

General intelligence and initiative

  • Understanding of child development and current EYFS.

  • Understanding and acceptance of child protection and safeguarding procedures 

  • Ability to identify any areas for development and refer any concerns

  • Ability to maintain emotional resilience in working with challenging behaviour

  • Take initiative in enhancing the learning environment and sharing good practice.

  • Proactive and flexible.

 

Special skills and interests

  • Specific play skills e.g. musical abilities, physical play, yoga, cooking, craft.

  • Other interests or skills which would benefit the group.

 

Disposition and attitudes

  • A friendly, caring, non-judgemental and helpful approach

  • Able to relate well to staff, children and parents.

  • Ability to work in a busy, demanding environment and demonstrate a practical problem-solving approach.

  • Ability to model and promote safe working practice
